I really really wanted to like this place. The other reviews are right - the people are incredibly nice. The food, however, is not so nice. It appears that everything fried is cooked well ahead of time. This means that just about everything came to the table in that not very warm, slightly soggy state. The Mongolian beef was very bland and lacked flavor.

Dinner was tasty! The menu is a little different for a Chinese place. A lot if the standard fare is missing. No General Tso's or Orange Chicken and no Crab Rangoons. But everything we had was yummy. Especially the egg rolls, no lie they are probably the best egg rolls I've had. Portions are huge and prices are a little high for Chinese but it's worth it. The service was exceptional, Charlie took really great care of us.

This is probably going to come across as a sentimentalist review, but I love this place. It's an older restaurant, owned by an older Chinese couple (and I think their kids now) and has been an institution in Lake Charles for decades. The crowd here tends to be a dedicated group who have been coming back for years. It's in a fairly run-down section of town, and the exterior of the building is pretty shabby. The wainscotting is pretty, the walpaper is dingy and fading, the artwork on the walls is a curious mix of gigantic Asian stuff and ornately-framed European style paintings. This place is made out of personality. The staff are always friendly, the atmosphere is always cozy. The food is what I like to think of as Chinese comfort food. Entrees are intended to be served family style with a couple of people more than able to serve off of a platter while leaving leftovers. Try the house beef. Try the shrimp noodles. Get one of the two-dozen or so featured (and very similar to each other) rum drinks. I've introduced a few people to this place, and everyone always seems to have the same, "How have I never been here before?" reaction.

Hands down the best Chinese food anywhere. Great food and owned by a wonderful local family. Been the place for my family since I was a kid. Everything is good, but I love the mandarin chicken and kon po shrimp. Best lunch value in town, and portions at dinner will feed you for days. For those who like to imbibe, drinks are generous and strong. Can't miss with this local icon.

Went here for New Year's Eve and the food and service was great once again. We called on New Year's eve day to make a reservation for a table of 14 and they happily took us. This is a well run family business by hard working people.

I'll make this simple - it's the best Chinese food in Lake Charles and the best eggroll I've ever had in my life! Not a big fan of the location but the staff and the food is always right on!

Great full service sit down Chinese Restaurant that offers exquisite service in an eloquent setting. From the moment you enter the restaurant it's apparent your experience is extremely important to the owners and the staff here. Although I felt the food was a little bit of a let down with a few exceptions I will continue to come here when I'm in town visiting my family. - Egg Rolls - I think for the most part everyone agrees the egg rolls here are incredible they are large, filled with quality ingredient and always served hot, a few of these alone would make a great lunch. - Won Ton Soup - I was a little disappointed that this soup was served luke warm it was a cold and rainy day out and I was looking forward to having a bowl of hot soup. The broth was rich in flavor and the wontons we pretty good I just couldn't deal with the temperature I decided not to bring this to the attention of our server since I wasn't interested in having this microwaved the kitchen staff should of caught this. - Beef and Broccoli w/fried rice - A very nice portion but it lacked any seasoning I ordered this extra extra hot I even mentioned to our server that I would like it "Thai Hot" if possible. The beef and broccoli appeared to be steamed instead of stir-fried and the sauce was very diluted. I ordered a bowl of hot chili oil to try and save this dish but it just didn't come together. The rice although was suppose to come as fried rice it was plain rice tossed in a pan for a moments at best it would have been better just steamed this definitely wasn't like any fried rice I've eaten. Like I stated earlier I will return I have had excellent dining experiences here in the past whether they were having a bad day in the kitchen or I ordered badly it doesn't matter, the fact remain today was a let down.

The House Beef cooked extra crispy with cashews added is the best thing I have ever ate! The Hot And Sour Soup is excellent. The High Hoops are my favorite appetizer. The Shrimp Toast is totally unique and fantastic. The Dumplings are great. The Long Life Noodles are a special treat. Order these things and I don't think you can go wrong. The House Catfish is great. I did not like the Mama's catfish. I do not recommend the Volcano shrimp. Everything else I have tried there has been good. The owner, Mr. Jay and his family have a tradition of great service that spans decades.

Id give it 5 stars but the service wasn't the greatest. Took almost 10 minutes before our order was taken. Food - I ordered the Curry chicken and it was excellent! Their egg rolls are absolutely out of this world!! Everything the reviews say was spot on. The wonton soup was a little too bland, added some soy sauce to give it some taste. I might try the egg drop next time. My husband orders the Kun Po chicken and wasn't overly impressed. The sauce was too sweet and not enough spice. Not what he was expecting based on other restaurants we have been to and ordered the same dish. Portions were very generous. We have enough for another meal tomorrow :) I really wish service would have been better and it would have gotten 5 stars.

So nice not to have a buffet style Chinese restaurant. Many of us have forgotten how wonderful the food and service is for an old Lake Charles restaurant. My son loved all the Art and the classic oriental style of the restaurant. The cleanliness of this restaurant is pretty impressive.

Great carry out Chinese food. Way better than a lot of delivery places I have tried in the past. I got the hunan beef and there was tons of tender beef as well as nice crisp veggies. This is a place I will definitely try again in the future. Good stuff!

We went to Peking Garden last Friday for a wedding rehearsal dinner! This is a local, family-owned restaurant with great Chinese food! The owner is very nice & personable - the kind of person that gets to know the customer & remembers names. First of all, the restaurant is beautiful, and there's lots of beautiful Chinese art on the walls. The food was served family-style. We were served probably the biggest egg rolls I've ever seen, shrimp toast, & dumplings as an appetizer. For dinner they brought out large plates of long-life noodles, rices, some kind of beef dish (I forget the name), and sweet and sour chicken. All the food was very good, and I especially enjoyed the shrimp toast & chicken! I don't usually eat shrimp foods, but this toast was quite good. Everyone had a great time & I think every rehearsal dinner attendee went home with several to-go boxes (the portions are HUGE!)

Favorite things are the decor and seeing the owning family working the place. Peking Garden is full of grand charm that only comes with great love and attention. This is not a strip shopping center take out joint. Decorated with large Chinese calligraphy and paintings, reproductions of European works, and local contemporary original paintings, along with carved wood panels, and other Chinese traditional fixtures, I the owner's deep appreciation for art is evident. The portions are generous, if a bit Americanized. I prefer more authentic food, but have come to appreciate the menu for what it is: an amalgamation that has evolved as the family put down roots here over the years. Some of the dishes even have the namesakes of patrons. They have a full bar and a drink menu. The place has a place in my heart.

I love this restaurant, the food is probably the best Chinese food that I have had and the portions are huge. however I had to put this review together only to address a concern that I have for one of the servers. If I ever dine in here again I will leave if I am stuck with her again. I don't know her name, but she is probably in her early 40's longer burnette or black hair pulled back in a pony table to one side. She claims she has been a server here for 9 years. ...so in a nutshell here is the service that my party received.... first introduction, placed drink orders, she was very unfamiliar with the bar and drinks types of spirits available. Which suprises me for someone claiming to being a server there for 9 years. Her excuse was most people don't order drinks there and she doesn't drink so she doesn't focus on the drink menu. But we were ok with that, we teased her a bit but meant no harm at all, she went and found us some assistance that was familiar and we were good after that. -However apparently she was convinced that we were mad about the drink thing so she just decided to give us the poorest service she could, as she clearly stated when we left "I didn't expect any tip from you guys anyway". She basically just forgot about us, when we asked her about some of the dishes she gave us half ass answers and pretty much just wanted to blow us off. While 2 people in our party have never even eaten there it was kind of difficult for us to describe the meals but we did our best. -Then she never checked back with us, left us all with empty drinks, missing one set of silverware, and all of our appetizer plates all over the table. Finally we made the best of it and ended up waiting nearly 15 minutes just to get her attention for the check. - It had been a bit since I had eaten there so I forgot we had to go to counter to pay, so we sat there another 15 minutes before we even realized that was what we needed to do. Which she could have told us when she dumped our to go boxes on the table and dropped our check off and split. -Then we finally made it to counter, and our friends that joined us paid for our meals, and low and behold she showed up to our the counter while we were paying, and we both decided to address to her how we were concerned about the service she provided. Then she just argued with us and stated she had been there 9 years and knew what she was doing, and that she didn't expect a tip from us anyway so she just let our table go. ...so ya that was alot to cram in here, but I am hoping that whom ever manages this place sees this so that they can do something about this server before she runs off all of the customers. I was very disappointed and do not feel that at any point we deserved for our service to be so poor, it made for a very unpleasant meal for us and our friends. ...on a good note if you are checking this restaurant out for a good Chinese cuisine, I highly recommend it. And hopefully you will be fortunate to have one of the other great servers that are there, as I usually have great service as this was an uncommon experience.

Didn't have a good experience at this place. First of all, it took 15 min to seat us since there was no hostess. Then, waited another 20 min so someone could take our order. The food was not worth the 9 bucks. The chicken in the kung po chicken tasted like it was microwaved. The only difference between the white rice and fried rice was the fried rice had two pieces of vegetables. Will not return.

This place is a little out of the way but well worth the effort to get there. I have been coming to Peking Garden since my daughter was a baby and she is now 25 and it is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant in Lake Charles. The food is delicious, the portions generous, and the service impeccable. Oh, and the prices are reasonable too. The dining room and atmosphere are nice enough for "date night" but also work for a casual lunch or dinner. I highly recommend Peking Garden if you are looking for something better than your run of the mill Chinese buffet but are not quite ready for the new wave Asian fusion fare now being offered in some of the trendier restaurants.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
